Frequently Asked Questions

Every Tuesday evening chess players meet in the Wargrave Arms, Crawford Place W1, (nearest Underground Edgware Road or Marble Arch), from about 7:30pm onwards.

Our club provides the equipment and members can borrow a set and clock by leaving their club card behind the bar.

Non-members and visitors can borrow a set and a clock for a deposit.  The games are mostly 5-minute, and there are players of all strengths.
Beginners are welcome, and sometimes surprise the regulars!

It's a pub, not just a chess club, so we are expected to buy drinks and/or food just like the other customers!

The Wargrave is an excellent Young's pub (it's in the Good Beer Guide),
and also serves good coffee and a range of soft drinks.

The main benefit of joining the club is participation in league and tournament games.  Home matches are played at the Exmouth Arms, Starcross St NW1 (nearest undergrounds Euston, Euston Square and Warren Street).  We have several teams in different league divisions, and usually book Monday and Wednesday evenings in the league season, which runs
from September to May.  Spectators are welcome.

The games are in the upstairs room of the pub, which provides sufficient peace and quiet.

Subscriptions are 35.00 (pounds sterling)
this year, which will get you regular match play, a club card to use at the Wargrave Arms and the social side of the club too.

We're one of the friendliest clubs in London: however if you don't like the "pub atmosphere," another club might be better (there are at least 30 clubs in London).
