report by Mark Davey
By 7:40pm we had 6 entries:
- 2 old members (Faye Ainscow & Alistair Morton)
- 2 recent members (Ian Adam & Damien Finlayson)
- 2 new members (Lorenzo Torricelli & Alex Edmunds)
Prizes were for 1st and 2nd.
The c ompetition was organized as a 6 player, 10 minutes each, all-play-all. 10 minutes is a strange time limit. There is time to do some serious thinking, but too much will endanger the game. Lots of heavy thinking was definitely going on, though quite a number of games terminated when someone’s clock went. The games wouldn’t have looked out of place in long games.
Faye stormed ahead with 4 out of 4, then had to play Lorenzo (on 3 out of 4) in the final round. Lorenzo needed to win to finish in the prizes, so tried slightly too hard in a dead drawn opposite colour bishop ending to desperately find a way to win, but to no avail. Thus Faye succeeding in winning with 100%, which is an excellent result in quite a strong Rabbits tournament.
Lorenzo who’d sacrificed to try and beat Faye, therefore ended up on 3, meaning that Alex, who beat everyone except Faye, came in 2nd.
Alistair scored more pints than points, but did find a nice set of moves to win in round 3.
Ian & Damien’s last game they decided (rather quickly !) that a draw would be a most appropriate result, after suffering (many times on time) to the others. Thus guaranteeing that no-one went home with a duck.
