Rick's Royal Game
Graham Brown
reporting on a brilliant game from our annual trip to France

Scroll down this page for the moves. Click the board on the left to see the game. Why not stop at Black's 37th Qd2 and try to work out the white finish?

I believe there is a famous game (forgotten who it was anyone know it?) where Black's Queen goes to g3 impervious to the h2 and f2 pawns. I also believe that spectators showered the board with gold coins.

Here is a game from France where Rick McMichael takes that concept one step further!

I recall his opponent refer to him as a "chess romantic" when a few people were sitting round analysing a game the day before. Although this comment was not intended derisively I nevertheless feel it adds some insight into the chessboard battle that followed the next day ...

Although Rick hasn't annotated this game, I will try to comment on this finish from what I heard of the post match analysis between the 2 players.

This move is a cracker!

38.Qh6!! Rg8

Now why not Rh3 threatens mate on h7? The Black queen can defend with Qc2!

39. Qg6!!

With the threat of Rh3 but stops Qc2! Amazingly white has time for this brilliant manouver across the Black King Shield. A Royal Game!
